Pet Shipping FAQ’s

  • Why Hire Happy Tails Travel?

When you need to move your pet, unfortunately it is not as simple as booking you furry family member an airline ticket and sending them on their way.  Airlines do not make it an easy, straight forward process to ship a cat, dog, or bird from one location to another.  In addition to needing a ticket (referred to as an Air Waybill) for your pet, you must also ensure that your desired departure and arrival airports are able to handle live animals, and that your pet can fit on your desired flight.  Not all aircrafts are equipped to carry live animals, and others are restricted as to which size dogs they can safely take on board.

If your pet is traveling internationally, even more steps are involved as country entry requirements continue to evolve.  This is especially relevant when considering live animal, or pet relocation.

Travel within the United States has its own set of health requirements a pet must go through, and other countries have even more requirements before a pet is able to enter the country.  In addition, often times there are letters of authority and import paperwork which are required that can only be obtained within the destination.

At Happy Tails Travel we are familiar with airline and country requirements and can find the safest, shortest route for your pet to travel by air with care.  When you hire us, you hire a team of trained professionals who have been shipping pets across the world for 20 years.  As a result, we have the knowledge and expertise to get your pets to their new home, and also have long-standing relationships with other pet professionals throughout the world, to ensure your pet is in good hands at both sides of their journey.

  • Why can’t I ship my pet myself or do it myself?

Flying a pet in a cabin is simple, if your pet is small enough to fit under your seat. Shipping multiple pets unaccompanied has a variety of requirements for safe travel. We provide a wide range of services to make it as easy as possible for you, and as safe as possible for your pet. Our knowledge of the airline industry as it relates to pets often saves you money in the long run.

Some airlines will not allow a pet to travel unless it is done with a professional pet travel agent. This is especially true with international flights. The array of important and sometimes complicated documents are sometimes missing or incorrect if done by a lay person, and the airlines want to ensure the pet will travel safely to its final destination without any problems.

  • How do I get started with your company?

After you review our services, prices, and testimonials to discover how we can help you with your safe pet travel planning, you can fill out our No cost, No obligation Pet Travel Form. If you have any questions before or after filling out the form, please give us a call at 520-299-3315 or 800-323-1718.

  • How much does it cost to transport my pet?

The airfare for the pets is based on weight and size of the crate. Since each client’s situation is slightly different, we choose airlines based on the specific details of your pet’s travel.

Our service is Air Travel Consultation. We help with all the arrangements of your pet's VIP (Very Important Pet) relocation from start to finish.
    Services available

We make sure all requirements of the airlines, which are governed by several agencies, including the TSA, are met. Below are links for pricing estimates:

  • What kind of pets do you ship?

We specialize in household pets. Along with cats and dogs we can ship birds and pocket pets.

  • What Countries do you ship to?

We have enjoyed sending pets by air with care around world since 1995. There are a lot of counties in our small world. We specialize in several to maximize our familiarity with their rules/regulations/standards in the specialty of pet shipping.

We currently ship to all European countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and the UK. Additionally, we are experienced in shipping pets to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Bahrain, Japan, the UAE, Canada, and many more. We are able to help with many other countries when the pet is being imported into the US from another country, if we have assistance of one of our professional agents who can assist with customs clearance in that country of origin. At this time we can only relocate pets with an arrival or departure city in the US.

  • Do you Provide Long Distance Ground Transportation?

Happy Tails Travel Inc. does not offer long distance ground transportation services.  While some companies do, we feel that there are more downsides than benefits of ground transportation when flight alternatives exist.

Air travel has many advantages over ground transportation, which is why we specialize in Travel by Air with Care.  The first of which is the time needed for transit.  Air travel makes it possible for pets to relocate to their new home in a fraction of the time that it would require if the pet was to be shipped by ground.

Flying is also not only shorter travel time, but is often a less expensive alternative.  Ground transportation often has a range between $250 - $300 per hour, whereas a flight will cost between $400 - $750 for a domestic flight.

While we do not provide long distance transportation, we are happy to help arrange transportation to and from the airport for your four legged family members!

  • What size crate does my pet need?

There are federal laws that require certain specifications for a crate. The pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down without restriction. There is a measuring chart that we can use to help determine pet size; It is better to be a little too big than a little too small! We provide a customized shopping list for each pet. It is important to have the right one, prepared properly or a pet can be turned away by the check in agent.

  • Can I rent a shipping crate?

No, it is best that each pet have their own personal crate so they can become accustomed to it and have their own "safe" place.  The crate is yours to keep once you buy it online or at a pet store.  As part of our service, we are happy to order a crate for you which can be delivered to you if we have enough time and if your pet is already crate trained.  We can also have one provided when your pet is picked up for their professional transport. We suggest maximum time for a pet to become familiar with the crate so that they are more comfortable with their surroundings during their flight.

  • Why can’t I find a flight for my pet during the summer?

Flying pets during the summer is our specialty. We are skilled at finding flights that are safe for pets during the summer. We follow the same rules as the public, and don’t go ‘around anything’ to get a great flight for a pet.

  • Why is Communication such an Important Role?

While we at Happy Tails Travel handle all of the logistics of your pets move from start to finish, you, the client, still play a vital role in your pet’s shipping process.  In most cases, it is you, the pet’s owner, who is handling your pet before their departure and are responsible for getting them the proper documentation they will need before traveling.  While Happy Tails Travel will provide you a timeline and tell you what you need and where to get it, you as the pet shipper and pet owner must physically go and get the needed paperwork. Therefore the shipper must stay in touch with team members at Happy Tails Travel.  At Happy Tails Travel we are constantly monitoring your pet’s travel itinerary and create a timeline once a flight date is selected.  In order for your pet to fly as scheduled, there are certain requirements which must be met in a timely fashion.  Missing any one appoint could set back your pet’s entire travel itinerary.

Therefore if you are the shipper of a pet please check your e-mail for updates from Happy Tails Travel at least once per day, call if you have any questions, and let us know when you have set-up important meetings such as vet visits so that we can mark it off the timeline. Happy Tails Travel will also call and provide you reminders when important dates are coming up, so you must be listening for and checking messages to hear any updates from us.

Together, through communication and teamwork, we can get your pet all the needed documents and make sure they make their original scheduled flight so they can get to their new home as planned.
  • What is a Pet Scam?

    Fake Websites

We have been made aware that there are some scam artists claim they are working with our company in "delivering pets" to the new owner. The people may be operating under the name Flint Pet Shippers, Skilled Pet Shippers, Blink Pet Shippers and Stratos Pet Inc. These scam artists have not, are not, and never will be affiliated with Happy Tails Travel, Inc. We are actively working to get these sites removed. Please do not send any money to these people. If you have already done so, please cease contact with them immediately. They do not intend to provide a legitimate service, be it providing a pet or assisting with pet travel. It is a scam!

    Fake Emails

Overseas scam artists have been flooding e-mail in-boxes claiming to be Pet Adoption companies (even Happy Tails Travel's name and content has been used). They will ask to send money via Western Union then refer you to a company whose name they stole. This is a scam! Please do not call us if this has happened to you because we cannot provide any help. Happy Tails Travel will NEVER accept payment through Western Union. For more details, please see Consumer Fraud Reporting.

  • Is travel to Hawaii from the mainland or the mainland to Hawaii considered international?

We ship a lot of pets safely to and from Honolulu, Hawaii and the other airports such as Kona and Lihue. Although there are quarantine requirements for pets, we do not charge additional fees. We charge the basic domestic Air Travel Consultation fee, which includes the overseeing of quarantine needs and regulations.

  • Why do some Countries take Longer to Plan my Pets’ Travel?

As addressed in previous questions, some countries have much stricter import requirements than others.  These extra requirements in particular include the health of your pet and required tests and vaccinations which are needed upon entering the country.  Some of these tests, like the FAVN blood test, must be conducted after your pet has received a series of shots and then a certain time period (typically 21 days) must pass before the results of your pet’s test are returned. These results must be obtained before your pet can receive an import permit or be granted entry into the country.  If any of the vaccinations or tests are out of order, this too will delay the shipping of your pet, or they may have to wait in quarantine upon arrival into the destination.  Some quarantine facilities require pets to stay up to 120 days if proper protocol is not followed beforehand.

Some of the countries (and states) which have stricter requirements and therefore require more time to plan travel into the country, include but are not limited to:

    • Australia
    • Bahrain
    • Hawaii
    • New Zealand
    • Singapore
    • United Arab Emirates

At Happy Tails Travel as part of our service, we prepare for you and your pet a detailed timeline of which vaccinations must be had and when they need to be done by.  Therefore as long as you stay in touch with members at Happy Tails Travel and follow the detailed plan, your pet should breeze through meeting the additional import requirements and arriving safely into their new home and country.
  • Why do I sometimes hear negative stories in the news?

The news focuses on the negative things in life. In reality, airlines report less than 30 deaths or injuries each year. When compared to the millions of flying pets per year, that is a fraction of one percent per year. The majority of pets that do die generally have an underlying health issue that was missed or ignored.
