Holiday Safety Tips for Pets
The holidays are an exciting time of year as we hang our decorations, shop for gifts, and prepare meals for the family. They can also be a dangerous time for our pets. There are a lot of ways pets can get injured or sick, especially when we aren’t paying attention. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pet safe this holiday season:
- Make sure your Christmas tree is secured well so it does not fall over
- Do not leave plates of food unattended
- Keep track of who is feeding the dog under the table…you don’t want an overstuffed pooch ruining your carpets or needing a late night emergency vet visit
- Keep all dishes cleaned and clear from the countertops so they can’t be knocked down
- Make sure the stockings and all their stuffers are high enough so they are out of reach from pets
- Clean up all ribbons, bows and wrapping and tissue paper right away
- Avoid using tinsel on the tree… this can be particularly dangerous for pets who like to nibble
As pet owners, we also have to decide how to care for our pets while we travel. Do we bring them with us, board them, or hire a caregiver? This decision can be tough, so here a few things to consider:
- How long are you going to be out of town? If the answer is less than 2 weeks, than we highly recommend leaving your pets at home. Travelling can be stressful for pets, and expensive for the owner as the pet ticket is usually one way only so a return ticket needs to be purchased as well as another vet visit. Don’t put the extra strain on yourself or your 4 legged friends…hire some help at home.
- What is your pet’s personality like? If you have a happy dog who loves everyone, consider boarding him/her where they’ll have constant attention and others to play with. Find a good boarding facility with space where they can run, nice sleeping quarters, and quality staff. If you have a cat that doesn’t even like the car ride to the vet, consider leaving her/him at home and hiring a caregiver to stop by once a day to feed, water, and for a quick play.
- Want to travel with your pet no matter what? Be sure to check with the airlines, or your hired pet professional travel agent, regarding the requirements for pets. You must consider what type of crate you’ll need, if they can go cargo or cabin, which flights they are allowed on, what paperwork they’ll need, and so on. Triple check your travel arrangement before the actually travel day as the busy season can cause delays, cancellations, and lost bookings.
