Pet Safety on the Road: Prevention, Preparation & Never Giving Up

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | Jul 05, 2026

Whether you’re taking your dog on a weekend getaway or using professional pet ground transport, preparation is the key to a safe journey. Most travel goes exactly as planned, but taking a few extra precautions can help prevent a stressful situation before it starts.

One of the simplest safety habits is to double-check your dog’s collar, harness, and leash every time you leave home, during transfers, and at each potty break. Even well-fitted equipment can loosen during travel, especially with active or nervous dogs.

Some pets require extra attention. Dogs that are fearful, timid, newly adopted, or known escape artists should always wear properly fitted, escape-proof equipment whenever possible. Having a few extra pet supplies on hand—such as a slip lead, backup leash, adjustable collar, flashlight, and high-value treats—can also make travel safer and less stressful.

If a pet does become lost, acting quickly is critical. Notify local Animal Control and law enforcement, alert nearby businesses and residents, and use social media and flyers to spread the word. Staying in the area and following up on credible sightings can greatly improve the chances of a safe reunion.

Above all, never lose hope. Countless pets have found their way home because owners, volunteers, and caring communities refused to quit. Persistence, patience, and preparation truly make a difference.

A few extra minutes spent checking equipment and planning ahead can provide peace of mind and help ensure every trip is a safe and happy one—for both pets and the people who love them.

At Happy Tails, we often hear from families who opt to handle their pet's move themselves and unexpectedly found themselves separated from a beloved companion along the way or when getting ready to leave home & the pet escapes and hides. Let us help!  We can arrange the travel of the pet, after he or she is found,  to reunite the family with the pet. By providing professional pet transportation services, we help take the stress and uncertainty out of long-distance pet travel, giving families peace of mind knowing their furry family members are in experienced, caring hands. And if the unexpected ever does happen, we're always happy to jump in quickly to reunite families with the pets they love. After all, our goal is simple: making sure every pet arrives safely where they belong.
