Tips For Pet ID for Travel

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | Feb 11, 2013

A family pet is an important part of families!

There are times when pets become separated from us through no fault of the family or pet. When this happens, recovery of your pet is vital, and having ID is the best way for your pet to be reunited with you.

Pet ID through a microchip is required for international travel for pets and highly recommended for domestic travel as well.

An up-to-date license and identification tags are always recommended. However, when collars and tags are damaged or lost, the microchip is your pet's only form of permanent identification.

A Microchip is a passive, integrated transponder that is about the size of a grain of rice (12mm) and is injected into animals with a 12-gauge needle. The microchip is encapsulated to prevent tissue irritation and microchip migration. The microchip is energized by an electromagnetic field produced by a microchip scanner. The microchip is permanent and will last the life of the pet. Each microchip has a unique identification number that is encoded and locked into its integrated circuit. When the pet is registered in a pet recovery database this identification number links the pet to the owner's contact information.

The pet will not experience any adverse reactions from this simple process to insert; it is similar to receiving routine vaccination through a needle and most pets don't even react when the microchip is injected. The microchip provides a safe, permanent form of identification.

It is very important to register your pet on initial insertion and whenever you move. There are different types of microchips. For example: Avid and Home Again. Call your vet first to see if they have mircrochipping service available. If necessary they can call to get the kit before your appointment.

To get your pet mircrochipped, there are different sources:

  • Many municipal shelters, clinics, veterinarians, and humane organizations offer microchipping
  • some even provide low-cost clinics and walk-in services

Call facilities in your area to determine which services are offered.

The price of microchipping services can vary from $10 to $75 or more.

Some providers also offer free microchipping when your pet is spayed or neutered. Call facilities in your area for pricing details.

High-tech protection can prevent heartbreak.

Enrollment in a pet recovery database brings lost pets home and provides peace of mind that your beloved companion will never wander unknown. Veterinarians encourage microchipping because it substantially increases the likelihood of a pet returning home by offering secure, reliable, unique and permanent identification.

One in three pets will become lost at some point during their life.

We hope it is not your pet. However if it should happen, having the peace of mind that your pet has a collar with ID for local contact and a mircorchip for international contact will provide you with extra peace of mind in locating your best friend.
