Do I need a Pet Travel Agent?

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | Nov 06, 2014

What is a pet travel agent? Pet travel agents are similar to people travel agents with some differences:

  • We arrange pet travel for cats, dogs, birds or any household pet
  • If a pet owner wants to travel on the same flight as their pet, we first find out the best flight for the pet then the pet owner can choose to fly on the same flight, making their own reservation.
  • A people travel agent takes care of all of the details of the travel plan from start to finish.
  • A pet travel agent does too. In addition to vacation travel a pet travel agent focuses more on permanent one way move for the pet, whether international or domestic.
  • Most of our pets travel unaccompanied, so that means in general, the pet & owner travel on separate flights, or the person may need to drive the car or moving truck to their new home.
  • This requires special pet professional companies to step in & assist with transportations to or from a pet friendly airline at that particular airport, boarding, also called kenneling of the pet before or after the airline flight date, or arranging veterinary services to get a Health Certificate which is required for a live animal to travel within 10 days of the departure date.
  • For international pet relocation, it is required to have additional documents, such as a USDA endorsed Health Certificate, also called a 7001, an Annex II, which is required for EU counties, or an import permit. All of these can be arranged by a pet travel agent.
  • An important aspect when moving pets is all of the moving pieces. Your professional agent coordinates all of the services involved to provide a smooth pet move, so you can concentrate on your travel & moving plans.
  • Peace of mind is an important part of hiring someone to help with the family move. This also ensures the safety of your pet & to ensure all proper documentation is done correctly & on a proper timeline.
  • Pet & people travel on airlines is different also in the matter of the many variables of deciding what flight is best for an animal traveling on the airlines.  This includes taking into consideration:
    • Breed, size, temperatures, number of pets, where pet flying from or to, if the pet is a snub nose or ‘dangerous breed’, the time of day as not all cargo stations have 24 hour service, & whether the pet is with a passenger.
    • Another challenge with arranging pet flights is that each airline has their own policies & procedures including price, size & number of crates they take, the length of time for reserving the flights, the aircraft type, & any restrictions on special breeds.
    • Having a professional help you with all of these details provides relief to the busy family that is planning a move, whether for a new job or a military PCS.
    • There are times when it saves money as agents know the best pricing among the different airlines.
