Puppy Travel By Ground Safe and Sound

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | Dec 08, 2023

Who doesn’t love a cute, cuddly puppy? They are so much fun to be around, but we sometimes forget that they have special needs. For a puppy to grow into a happy, healthy, well-behaved dog, we must take special care. That includes while they are on the road.

At Happy Tails Travel, we take special care of every pet, but puppies need a little extra TLC. We will transport puppies as young as 8 weeks as long as they are fully weaned. At that age, they need frequent breaks to go to the bathroom and get some exercise. Puppies are often not able to hold their bladder for longer than 2 hours, so we stop frequently to get them out of their carrier so that they do not learn bad habits and stay clean. Puppies also have short attention spans and are not usually good at keeping themselves entertained. Those breaks are the perfect opportunity to explore new sights and smells, and get a little playtime in, so that they are ready to nap through the next leg of their trip.

The immune system of a puppy has not fully developed, and they aren’t able to get fully vaccinated until they are 16 weeks old. Because of this, it is extra important to make sure they aren’t exposed to illnesses. Our driver’s vehicles are always cleaned between pet families so that illnesses do not spread. We also make sure to avoid other pets at stops and avoid places like dog parks to avoid puppies being exposed to dangerous illnesses. You may prefer that your new puppy stays inside except for pick-up, drop off, and going into the pet friendly hotel room for overnight stays to further reduce their exposure. Since our services are customizable, we can accommodate this request and will set up potty pads so that everything stays clean and sanitary for lots of play and cuddle time! Your puppy’s well-being is our first priority!
